Leadership Is Part 2 – Influence

Sermon Notes:

“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.  “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.  In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:13-16 NIV

“…The most important one of you should be like the least important, and your leader should be like a servant.” Luke 22:26 CEV

How to Influence Like Jesus:

  1. Be an example to follow

“I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.” John 13:15 NIV

“Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.” 1 Corinthians 11:1 NIV

“Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.” 1 Timothy 4:12 NIV

  1. Be an exhorter

Jesus challenged people in their:

  • Priorities

“…Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” Mark 10:21 NIV

  • Faith

“Go and announce to them that the Kingdom of Heaven is near. Heal the sick, raise the dead, cure those with leprosy, and cast out demons. Give as freely as you have received!” Matthew 10:7-8 NLT

  • Small Thinking

“…go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.  Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:19-20 NLT

  1. Be an encourager

“Then he asked them, “But who do you say I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” Jesus replied, “You are blessed, Simon son of John, because my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. You did not learn this from any human being. Now I say to you that you are Peter (which means ‘rock’), and upon this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it.”  Matthew 16:15-18 NLT

  • See the potential in others
  • Treat people the way you want them to become, instead of how they are
  • Correct without condemning

“Catch people doing something right.” Ken Blanchard

  1. Be an equipper

  • Jesus modeled ministry to His disciples before He sent them out
  • Jesus trusted His disciples with responsibility

“And I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven; whatever doors you lock on earth shall be locked in heaven; and whatever doors you open on earth shall be open in heaven!” Matthew 16:19 LB

  1. Be an equal

“I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.” John 15:15 NIV

“Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves.” Philippians 2:3 NLT

  1. Be enduring in prayer

“I have prayed for you, Simon that your faith may not fail…” Luke 22:32 NIV

“I am praying not only for these disciples but also for all who will ever believe in me through their message.” John 17:20 NLT
