2 Timothy 2:14-26

HOW TO OVERCOME DISTRACTIONS

1. Keep focused on the central themes of Scripture

“Remind them of these things, and solemnly charge them in the presence of God not to wrangle about words, which is useless and leads to the ruin of the hearers.” 2 Timothy 2:14

2. Keep focused on your own personal growth

“Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15

  • Present yourself, not others, to God
  • Accurately handling the word of truth

“For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.” Hebrews 4:12

“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing (Blowing) of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.” Romans 12:2

3. Keep away from things that stunt your growth

  • Arguing

“The Lord’s bond-servant must not be quarrelsome, but be kind to all, able to teach, patient when wronged, with gentleness correcting those who are in opposition, if perhaps God may grant them repentance leading to the knowledge of the truth, and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, having been held captive by him to do his will.” 2 Timothy 2:24-26

The marks of a fruitful disagreement:

  • Love
  • Striving for peace
  • Seeking to understand each other (rather than agreement)
  • Patience
  • Kindness
  • Conspiracy/speculation theology

“But avoid worldly and empty chatter, for it will lead to further ungodliness, and their talk will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus, men who have gone astray from the truth saying that the resurrection has already taken place, and they upset the faith of some…But refuse foolish and ignorant speculations, knowing that they produce quarrels.” 2 Timothy 2:16-18,23

  • Youthful lusts

“Now flee from youthful lusts and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.” 2 Timothy 2:22
