“Then Moses went out and spoke these words to all Israel:“I am now a hundred and twenty years oldand I am no longer able to lead you.The Lordhas said to me, ‘You shall not cross the Jordan.’TheLordyour God himself will crossover ahead of you.He will destroy these nationsbefore you, and you will take possession of their land. Joshua also will crossover ahead of you, as theLordsaid. And theLordwill do to them what he did to Sihon and Og,the kings of the Amorites, whom he destroyed along with their land.TheLordwill deliverthem to you, and you must do to them all that I have commanded you.Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrifiedbecause of them, for theLordyour God goes with you;he will never leave younor forsakeyou.” Then Moses summoned Joshua and saidto him in the presence of all Israel, “Be strong and courageous, for you must go with this people into the land that theLordswore to their ancestors to give them, and you must divide it among them as their inheritance.TheLordhimself goes before you and will be with you;he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” Deuteronomy 31:1-8 NIV

“After the death of Moses the servant of theLord, theLordsaid to Joshuason of Nun, Moses’ aide:“Moses my servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan Riverinto the landI am about to give to them—to the Israelites.I will give you every place where you set your foot,as I promised Moses.Your territory will extend from the desert to Lebanon, and from the great river, the Euphrates—all the Hittitecountry—to the Mediterranean Sea in the west. No one will be able to stand against youall the days of your life. As I was withMoses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.Be strongand courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their ancestorsto give them. “Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obeyall the lawmy servant Mosesgave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go.Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips;meditateon it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid;do not be discouraged, for theLordyour God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:1-9 NIV

Factors that form a courageous life

Joshua learned how to be courageous by:

  1. Learning from and watching Moses

  • Joshua was Moses’ aide before he was his successor

“Then Moses set out with Joshuahis aide, and Moses went up on the mountainof God.” Exodus 24:13 NIV

  1. Building his life on biblical convictions

“Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips;meditateon it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.”  Joshua 1:8 NIV

  • I only believe the parts of the Bible that I obey

“The law of theLordis perfect, refreshing the soul. The statutes of theLordare trustworthy, making wise the simple. The precepts of theLordare right, giving joyto the heart. The commands of theLordare radiant, giving light to the eyes. The fear of theLordis pure, enduring forever. The decrees of theLordare firm, and all of them are righteous. They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the honeycomb.By them your servant is warned;in keeping them there is great reward. But who can discern their own errors?Forgive my hidden faults. Keep your servant also from willful sins;may they not rule over me. Then I will be blameless, innocent of great transgression. May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heartbe pleasingin your sight,Lord, my Rockand my Redeemer.    Psalms 19:7-14 NIV

“All Scripture is God-breathedand is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17 NIV

  1. Growing in godly character

“Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obeyall the lawmy servant Mosesgave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go.  Joshua 1:7 NIV

“The wicked fleethough no one pursues, but the righteous are as bold as a lion.” Proverbs 27:1 NIV

  • I only experience the parts of the Bible that I apply

  • Encountering Jesus in a deep way

“Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn swordin his hand. Joshua went up to him and asked, “Are you for us or for our enemies?” “Neither,” he replied, “but as commander of the army of theLordI have now come.” Then Joshua fell facedownto the groundin reverence, and asked him, “What message does my Lordhave for his servant?” The commander of theLord’s army replied, “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy.”And Joshua did so.” Joshua 5:13-15 NIV

“But Jesus immediately said to them:“Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” Matthew 14:27 NIV

“These things I have spoken to you, so thatin Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, buttake courage;I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 NASB

“Be on your guard; stand firmin the faith; be courageous; be strong.” 1 Corinthians 16:13 NIV
