The Holy Spirit: Experiencing the Holy Spirit
Pastor Scott Applegate
“Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.” Ephesians 5:17-21 NIV
1.What does it mean to be “filled” with the Spirit?
- To be filled with the Spirit means to be under the control and influence of the Spirit
2.Why do we need to be filled with the Holy Spirit?
- We need a power greater than ourselves
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8 NIV
- We need an intimacy greater than any human capacity
“On the last and most important day of the festival, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone is thirsty, he should come to Me and drink! The one who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, will have streams of living water flow from deep within him.” He said this about the Spirit. Those who believed in Jesus were going to receive the Spirit, for the Spirit had not yet been received because Jesus had not yet been glorified.” John 7:37-39 HCSB
3.How are we to be filled with the Spirit?
- Be in the word
“speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit…”
- Be a worshipper
“Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord…”
- Be thankful
“always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
- Be submissive
“Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.”
