The Holy Spirit #1: Receiving the Holy Spirit

Pastor Scott Applegate

“I assure you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit.Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life.So don’t be surprised when I say, ‘Youmust be born again.’The wind blows wherever it wants. Just as you can hear the wind but can’t tell where it comes from or where it is going, so you can’t explain how people are born of the Spirit.” John 3:5-8 NLT

“…no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” without the help of the Holy Spirit.” 1 Corinthians 12:3 NCV

“For we were all baptizedbyone Spiritso as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.” 1 Corinthians 12:13 NIV

How can I know if I have received the Holy Spirit and am born-again?

Do I have…?

  • A new righteousness

“Therefore, there is now no condemnationfor those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesusthe law of the Spirit who gives life has set youfreefrom the law of sinand death. For what the law was powerlessto do because it was weakened by the flesh,God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful fleshto be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh,in order that the righteous requirementof the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.” Romans 8:1-4 NIV

“But when the kindnessand love of God our Saviorappeared,he saved us,not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washingof rebirth and renewalby the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior,so that, having been justified by his grace,we might become heirshaving the hopeof eternal life.” Titus 3:4-7 NIV

  • A new mindset

Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires;but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.” Romans 8:5 NIV

  • A new lifestyle

The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is lifeand peace.” Romans 8:6 NIV

  • A new attitude

The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God;it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so.                     Romans 8:7 NIV

  • A new purpose

Those who are in the realm of the fleshcannot please God.” Romans 8:8 NIV

  • A new identity

You, however, are not in the realm of the fleshbut are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God              lives in you.And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ. But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives lifebecause of righteousness.”          Romans 8:9-10 NIV

5 Things we will experience if we are born-again and living by the Spirit:

We will experience…

  • The power of the Holy Spirit

And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the deadis living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodiesbecause ofhis Spirit who lives in you.Romans 8:11 NIV

  • The conviction of the Holy Spirit

Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation—but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it.For if you live according to the flesh, you will die;but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.” Romans 8:12-13 NIV

  1. The leading of the Holy Spirit

For those who are led by the Spirit of Godare the children of God.Romans 8:14 NIV

  • The witness of the Holy Spirit

The Spirityou received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again;rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry,“Abba,Father.”The Spirit himself testifies with our spiritthat we are God’s children.” Romans 8:15-16 NIV

  1. The perseverance of the Holy Spirit

Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferingsin order that we may also share in his glory.Romans 8:17 NIV
