“Trust in the Lord with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight…Blessed is a person who finds wisdom, And one who obtains understanding. For her profit is better than the profit of silver, And her produce better than gold. She is more precious than jewels, And nothing you desire compares with her. Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor. Her ways are pleasant ways, And all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her,
And happy are those who hold on to her.” Proverbs 3:5-6, 13-18 NASB
Why Do We Need Wisdom Concerning Our Emotions?
- Because feelings are often unreliable
“There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.” Proverbs 14:12 ESV
- Because God does not want us to be manipulated by how we feel but walk in what in what is true
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6 ESV
- Because God can’t rule my life if my emotions are ruling
- Because if we don’t we become vulnerable to attacks from the enemy
“A person without self-control is like a city with broken-down walls.” Proverbs 25:28 NLT
How Can I Learn To Manage My Emotions?
- I need to identify what I am feeling
“Why, my soul, are you downcast…? Psalm 42:5a NIV
- I need to challenge what I am feeling
“Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.” Psalm 42:5b NIV
- I need to channel what I am feeling
Into worship: “Rejoice always.” 1 Thessalonians 5:16
Into action: (See 2 Corinthians 1:3-4)
- I need to surrender what I am feeling to God
“For we walk by faith not sight.” 2 Corinthians 5:7 NASB
“How precious is Your mercy, God!
And the sons of mankind take refuge in the shadow of Your wings.” Psalm 36:7 NASB
