Have you ever been encouraged, or maybe even amazed, by the way a Christian has walked through a season of loss, stress, pain, or difficulty? Has your faith been increased by the way another person has held up under affliction and clung to God? As we walk in the ways of God, regardless of the circumstances, God will use our faith to lift up others and to magnify the name of Jesus. This is the psalmist’s plea in verse 74 and again in verse 79. He cries out to God, “Let those who fear you rejoice when they see me, for I have put my hope in your word.” A few verses later he asks, “May those who fear you turn to me, and understand your statutes.”
Let’s walk so closely with God that our lives are a testimony to God’s character, love, and goodness in every season and the people around us look at us and see Him. We can do this by trusting God’s character. No matter what our circumstances might be, we can trust that God is sovereign and that we are his (v 73). We can rely on His faithfulness and righteousness (v 75). We can cast ourselves on His unfailing love and compassion (v 76 and 77).
God has given us everything we need to live according to His Word and to experience unbroken fellowship with Him. So whatever season of life you are in, whether you are living with plenty or you are in need, whether you are celebrating or grieving, “be careful how you live, not as unwise, but as wise, making the most of every opportunity” (Ephesians 5:15.) In this way, we can pray with the psalmist, “May I wholeheartedly follow your decrees, that I may not be put to shame” (v 80).
