Do you long to live a holy life and please God in all you do? Do you want to “stay on the path of purity” (v 9)? This kind of life requires us to live according to God’s Word. The second stanza of Psalm 119 gives us a road map for doing just that. If we are going to live according to God’s Word we must seek Him with all our heart (v 10), hide His Word in our heart (v11), and meditate on His precepts (v 15).
What does it mean to seek God with all of our heart? It means to desire Him above all else and to put our sincere and best effort into knowing Him. We must seek to truly know Him relationally, not just know about Him intellectually. Spend time every day seeking God. Figure out how you are wired to connect with God and make it a priority in your life.
In order to stay on the path of purity we must learn to hide God’s Word in our heart. This requires a disciplined engagement with the Bible on a regular basis. Begin to memorize scripture and watch as the Holy Spirit uses the Word that you have hidden in your heart to encourage you, correct you, and guide you. Ask God to give you a hunger for His Word and the discipline to hide it in your heart daily.
Lastly, in order to keep ourselves from sin and live a holy life, we must meditate on God’s precepts (His commands and principles). As we seek God and hide His Word in our heart we will uncover the beautiful love story of redemption that God is writing. By meditating on His precepts we will be able to view and understand all of our life experiences, both the joyful and the difficult, through the lens of scripture. As the Holy Spirit enables us to understand the Word of God, He will transform our minds and hearts and enable us to live a holy life pleasing to God.
