Jesus knew that his mission was now finished, and to fulfill Scripture he said,“I am thirsty.”A jar of sour wine was sitting there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put it on a hyssop branch, and held it up to his lips. When Jesus had tasted it, he said,“It is finished!”Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.” John 19:28-30 NLT

“It is finished”: TETELESTAI

  • Servant: The task is completed
  • Judge: Justice has been served
  • Accountant: The debt has been paid in full
  • Artist: The painting is finished
  • Priest: The perfect sacrifice has been given

What did Jesus finish by His death and resurrection?

  1. Jesus fulfilled all that God had promised

“Then he said,“When I was with you before, I told you that everything written about me in the law of Moses and the prophets and in the Psalms must be fulfilled.”Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. And he said,“Yes, it was written long ago that the Messiah would suffer and die and rise from the dead on the third day. It was also written that this message would be proclaimed in the authority of his name to all the nations, beginning in Jerusalem: ‘There is forgiveness of sins for all who repent.” Luke 24:44-47 NLT

“For all of God’s promises have been fulfilled in Christ with a resounding “Yes!” And through Christ, our “Amen” (which means “Yes”) ascends to God for his glory.” 2 Corinthians 1:20 NLT

  1. Jesus satisfied what God’s justice required

“The law of Moses was unable to save us because of the weakness of our sinful nature. So God did what the law could not do. He sent his own Son in a body like the bodies we sinners have. And in that body God declared an end to sin’s control over us by giving his Son as a sacrifice for our sins. He did this so that the just requirement of the law would be fully satisfied for us…” Romans 8:3-4 NLT

“For Christ is the endof the law for righteousnessto everyone who believes” Romans 10:4 CSB

  1. Jesus paid my debt of sin

He canceled the unfavorable record of our debts with its binding rules and did away with it completely by nailing it to the cross.” Colossians 2:14 GNT

For it is by his Son alone that we have been redeemed and have had our sins forgiven.” Colossians 1:14 JBP

  1. Jesus defeated the power of the devil

the Son of God came to destroy these works of the devil.” 1 John 3:8 LB

  • His power to scare me with the fear of death

“Because God’s children are human beings—made of flesh and blood—the Son also became flesh and blood. For only as a human being could he die, and only by dying could he break the power of the devil, who had the power of death. Only in this way could he set free all who have lived their lives as slaves to the fear of dying.” Hebrews 2:14-15 NLT

Jesus said to her,“I amthe resurrection and the life. The one who believesin me will live, even though they die;and whoever lives by believingin me will never die.Do you believe this?”
“Yes, Lord,” she replied, “I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God,who is to come into the world.” John 11:25-27 NIV

  • His power to tempt me

“For he has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear Son,” Colossians 1:13 NLT

  • His power to accuse me

“In this way God took away Satan’s power to accuse you of sin, and God openly displayed to the whole world Christ’s triumph at the cross where your sins were all taken away.” Colossians 2:15 LB
