“Jesus said,“Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” Luke 23:34 NIV

  • When Jesus prayed this from the cross He was putting into practice what He preached
  • It is easier to preach what He practiced than to practice what He preached.
  • Jesus never asks us to do something He hasn’t already done Himself

Example #1

“But to you who are willing to listen, I say, love your enemies! Do good to those who hate you.Bless those who curse you. Pray for those who hurt you.” Luke 6:27-28 NLT

“It was just before the Passover Festival.Jesus knew that the hour had comefor him to leave this world and go to the Father.Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus.Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from Godand was returning to God;so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.” John 13:1-5 NIV

“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since we have now been justifiedby his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wraththrough him!For if, while we were God’s enemies,we were reconciledto him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!” Romans 5:8-10 NIV

Example #2

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.” Matthew 5:38-39 NIV

“Jesus replied,“Everyone knows what I teach. I have preached regularly in the synagogues and the Temple, where the peoplegather. I have not spoken in secret. Why are you asking me this question? Ask those who heard me. They know what I said.” Then one of the Temple guards standing nearby slapped Jesus across the face. “Is that the way to answer the high priest?” he demanded. Jesus replied,“If I said anything wrong, you must prove it. But if I’m speaking the truth, why are you beating me?” Then Annas bound Jesus and sent him to Caiaphas, the high priest.” John 18:20-24 NLT
Example #3

“Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.” Matthew 5:11 NIV

“To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps. “He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth.”  When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly.” 1 Peter 2:21-23 NIV

How can I put into practice what He preached?

  • I need to take up my cross daily

“If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross daily, and follow me.” Luke 9:23 NLT

  • I need to learn to respond and not react

“Do everything in love.” 1 Corinthians 16:14 NIV

  • I need to walk in the Spirit

“So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh…” Galatians 5:16 NIV

But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.” Galatians 5:22-23 NLT

  • I need to forgive as I have been forgiven

“For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.” Matthew 6:14-15 NIV

“Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others.” Colossians 3:13 NLT
